  Full Time Live-Out Nannies...

Nationally this is the most popular form of Nanny care.  It provides families the convenience of the caregiver coming to YOUR home, while not providing living quarters.  Parents maintain their privacy.  Additionally, parents in this situation often have a much easier experience in maintaining the Employer/Employee relationship.

As in any Nanny search, parents need to determine their needs - hours, job description, age and expectation of their Nanny prior to searching for one.  The more information that you can provide to the agency, the easier it will be for the agency to send you Nanny candidates that you will be pleased with.

To get you started, consider these suggestions:

1.  Develop a contract with your Nanny indicating hours of work, job description, annual reviews and fully detail your expectation of your Nanny.  Don't ever assume that they should "know" anything.

2.  Be clear about the "rules of your home".  Whatever the rules that you have developed for your home must be discussed with your Nanny.  Often when miss-communication occurs, it is due to the lack of knowledge of the Nanny regarding the parents preferences.

3.  Set a schedule of quarterly or semi-annual meeting times with your Nanny on the onset of their employment so that you and your Nanny can discuss any issues or concerns you may have, as well as share appreciation for the work they have done.

4.  Remember the roles of employer and employee.  In Live-In situations, these lines become more undefined and can create issues between the Nanny and the family.

5.  Strive to develop a "team" relationship with your Nanny.  As a team, each of you bring important ideas to he table.  It is imperative that your relationship is open and honest which will enable you both to send clear messages to your children.
