Benefit packages for Nannies are not mandated by the agency or by law.
HOWEVER ...
In any employment situation, the retention rate is higher when a good benefit package is offered. Developing a benefit package is not difficult, but the rewards for doing so are many. Consider the hours and days you would be required to pay for childcare if you utilized any other childcare option (remember, when your child is sick you still have care). Include in your benefit package paid holidays, paid vacations, (yours and theirs), paid sick days, as well as pay for additional hours the Nanny may work beyond the regularly scheduled hours.
It is not unrealistic for Nannies to expect these benefits in their employment. Make benefits part of the employment relationship with your Nanny from the beginning.
Additional benefits such as regular performance evaluations, annual pay increases, health insurance and life insurance are also “perks” which enhance the retention of your Nanny, and paid training can increase the quality of care for your child. Although not everyone can offer it all -
Offering what you can will truly make a difference…
How Do I Put Together A job Description?
Developing an employment contract with your Nanny is not only easy, but is also a very important document between you and your Nanny. It clarifies your expectations of your Nanny as well as what your Nanny can expect from you, the employer. Communication should be the most important part of the job description.
First, discuss with your family what child-related responsibilities should be handled on a daily basis. Then review which responsibilities your family will feel most comfortable asking another person to perform. Keep in mind that your Nanny’s primary responsibility should be your child. Therefore, envision a typical day with your child rather than your household when developing your job description. Plan to discuss revisions annually or as needed based on the needs and/or development of your child.
As you interview potential Nanny candidates, discuss with them the responsibilities that your position requires. Obtain feedback from the Nanny, defining terminology as necessary. Good, honest communication is the key to good relationships.
How Do I Become An Employer?
When you hire a Nanny, you are obligated by state and federal laws to file a number of forms and taxes. Many parents attempt to avoid this process by paying their Nanny in cash - or in other words, "off the books."
Although this may be tempting, IT IS ILLEGAL and can make you liable for unpaid taxes and fines in the future. Our services attempts to offer you the most up-to-date information available on employment issues through our Parent Welcome Packet. however, WE ARE NOT TAX CONSULTANTS. Therefore, our information should NEVER replace your use of a tax professional.
Our Parent Welcome Packet will offer you information concerning:
- Obtain Federal & State Employer ID Numbers
- Social Security & Medicare Withholding Tax Information
- Federal & State Unemployment Tax Information (when available)
What If Our Nanny Doesn't Fit Our Family?
Even with the best information and intentions, on rare occasions, the family's choice for a Nanny does not work out - either for the family or for the Nanny. In those rare situations Cornerstone Christian Nannies will gladly work with you to find a replacement Nanny. We understand that the bottom line is the care of your children; therefore, we will gladly do all we can to assist you. This may be in the form of securing a temporary Nanny who will fill in as you look for a suitable replacement or simply providing another permanent Nanny.
If your Nanny leaves within the first eight weeks of employment, the replacement Nanny will be offered to you with NO additional placement fee due the agency. This is your GUARANTEE PERIOD.
However, if your Nanny leaves your employment for ANY reason after the first eight weeks guarantee period and prior to the Nanny's one-year anniversary of employment, the replacement fee will be pro-rated. The pro-ration for this replacement fee is 10% of the original placement fee multiplied by the number of months your Nanny was in your employ. For example, if you have your Nanny employed for 6 months, the pro-ration would be as follows: 8 wk (2months) guarantee period, subtracted from 6 months will leave 4 months - therefore 10% of the original placement fee would be multiplied by four.
